Stephen Hepworth

This work has grown out of a fascination with the relationship between the photographic image and the physical surface upon which it appears.  It is an exploration of how the creation of photographs seems to transform thoughts into objects and of how, through looking at photographs, objects are transformed into thoughts by means of our imagination.

I have made photographs whilst being surrounded by breaking waves and by flocks of birds; both of which fragment and regenerate into new forms.

When a digital camera records this happening, it creates a latent image that is also fragmented – into an arrangement of electrically charged particles held within a silicon chip. These can either be preserved or almost infinitely rearranged to form new representations.

The memories and images that we hold in our minds are electrical too and can be said to share a similar fragility.
